Weekend Update

This past weekend we went to Port Townsend with my mom and stayed at The Palace Hotel in Captain Tibbals room which was so nice. Morgan rode the ferry for his first time of course he was completely oblivious to this event but I took pictures to document it anyway.
Steve attended the Sea Kayak Symposium at Fort Worden on Saturday where he took some kayaking classes and got to try out different kayaks. My mom, Morgan, and I went to the PT Farmers Market and then shopped around the main street in downtown.
Saturday night Char and Steve came out and we went to dinner which was a lot of fun. Morgan was the perfect little angel the entire time. I was so stressed he would freak out from being in a new place but he was so good especially at the hotel.

Since it was rainy I didn't take too many pictures but here are a few...

Busy Bee

This past week was a very busy week for Morgan. We took him to LaConner and went to the coolest little baby shop called Bunnies by The Bay they have adorable plush stuffed animals and bugs that come with their own names and stories it is very cute.

Thursday, Charlene and Steve came by and met Morgan. He was completely fascinated by both of them it was really funny. That evening Steve and I went out alone for the first time and saw a movie while Gramma Colleen babysat. It was hard to leave him even though he was in trusted hands I felt panicked and guilty, but the movie was good and I survived.

Friday thru Saturday is a blur all I know is that I had an infected tooth and had a root canal.

Sunday, we went and visited Steve's Grandpa so that he could meet Morgan as well however he was very tired and wound up freaking out about a half hour of being there so we had to leave.

This weekend will be Morgan's first BIG outing and should be very fun! We are all going with Gramma Colleen to Port Townsend for the Sea Kayaking Symposium and we are going to stay two nights at the Palace Hotel which used to be an old Victorian brothel back in the day. It also happens to have a reputation for being haunted. Steve will spend the day learning how to kayak while the rest of us window shop and hang out on the beach. I am nervous about how Morgan will handle two nights away from home, I fear that he will start crying and not stop but I guess if it happens we will just have to deal with it.

And now for some pictures....

mini Milestones

Yesterday was Morgan's 4 week birthday. Not sure if that counts as a month or if the month birthday would be on September 9th. I was planning a big photo shoot for Morgan yesterday but instead I laid in bed all day exhausted with no motivation to do anything. I guess that is somewhat expected. Tomorrow I will take new pictures and commemorate them as his 4 week and 2 day birthday photos.

In his short 4 weeks he has accomplished some things:

1. His head outgrew one of his hats! (He totally has Steve's giant head)

2. His little bottom and tummy has outgrown his newborn swaddler diapers and we are now up to the next size.

3. His gassiness has decreased significantly to almost I would say nonexistent. (Steve may disagree though.)

4. During his tummy time he can do baby pushups off the boppy pillow and hold his head up high off the pillow and turn it.

5. He focuses intently on anything hanging above his head like the fishies on his swing or the hanging frog and turtle off his car seat. He also focuses on our faces and has surprised us with some smiles that are probably accidental but still cute.

6. And the saddest thing is he now has tears when he cries.

Since I didn't really take any new photos I will post some from the last set I took. This is a shot of Necrobutcher and Morgan looking not too happy with their situation.

Visitors

Today Morgan met his Great Uncle Kevin or in the spirit of my cousin Max we will call him Great Uncle Kez. Kevin was lucky and arrived during one of Morgan's few awake times and I managed to get a couple cute photos...

Communication Breakdown

Probably the most frustrating part of dealing with Morgan right now is his complete inability to communicate what is bothering him in even the most general terms. He has exactly one word in his vocabulary, and that word is 'Waah'.

"I'm cold" = Waah

"I'm Hungry" = Waah

"John McCains decision to choose Sarah Palin as his running mate is a disaster that fails on all levels by alienating progressive women voters, nullifying the experience arguement against Obama, and calling into question his judgement and commitment to stated patriotic values." = Waah

There are some variations in the crying, for example sometimes I can tell the difference between his hungry cry and the crying he does because he is uncomfortable with gas pain but it isn't all that distinctive. To complicate matters, those distinctions only exist when he is at the very start of his crying. Once he gets himself worked up then the distinctions go away and it falls into a very generic upset crying.

So far as the crying is concerned, we've had a few fussy days but other than that it hasn't been so bad. After a few instances of him being fussy for long periods I thought he may have colic, I then looked up the definition of colic (3 hours a day, 3 days a week, 3 weeks a month of full out screaming crying) and realized how lucky we are. While I lack any frame of reference I'm guessing that Morgan is somewhere in the middle of the curve as far as crying is concerned. Still, it feels like it's alot when attempting to calm a screaming baby on 2 hours of sleep. I'm getting myself a pair of earplugs. That sounds bad, but it's not so that I won't hear him start to cry it's so that when I've got him up on my shoulder trying to calm him down I don't need to get the full shriek right in my ear.

In other news, Morgan has earned a last minute reprieve and will no longer face the knife. Less than an hour before the appointment to get him circumcisied we realized that we aren't Jews, Christians, or people who have a religious or traditional reason to get our son cut. Hence we will leave that decision for Morgan to make when he is older. If Morgan had any clue what he just avoided, he would probably breathe a sigh of relief. As it sits, he'll just cuddle up with a bottle and have a warm cozy afternoon.

Melissa took some photos this morning thinking they would be the last ones before he had the circumcision so here they are...
